PhD position in Neuroregeneration/Neural Stem Cell Biology
A PhD position is available in the research group of Dr. Christian Schachtrup in the Institute of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the University of Freiburg. This position is integrated in the newly established DFG-funded SFB/TRR 167 initiative “Development, Function and Potential of Myeloid Cells in the Central Nervous System (NeuroMac)”.
Our research interest focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms driving neural stem cell and astrocyte fate in an altered extracellular environment upon CNS disease with blood-brain barrier opening (Bohrer et al., 2015, The EMBO Journal; Schachtrup et al., 2015, Nat. Neurosci.). This PhD position will strongly focus on the interplay of myeloid cells on neural stem cell differentiation in CNS disease. Thus, the candidate will be expected to get familiar with a wide array of state-of-the-art techniques like cell fate mapping using reporter mice, advanced imaging, cell biology (e.g. neural stem cell assays), signaling processes and regenerative medicine.
We are a small and international group of scientifically interested colleagues and thus are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic student with hands-on mentality and strong team-player qualities. The successful candidate will be offered excellent practical training opportunities. Furthermore, our group is embedded into a highly active neuroscience and neural stem cell community in Freiburg providing numerous opportunities for networking and scientific exchange within various seminars and retreats.
Applicants should hold a diploma/master in molecular medicine, biology, chemistry or related disciplines, preferably with a strong background in molecular biology, neuroscience or signaling processes. Candidates with prior hands-on experience working with animal models for CNS diseases, such as trauma or stroke will be given priority.
The position is available immediately. Salary will be based on previous experience and is according to TVöD guidelines.
Applications should include a CV with a cover letter, statement of research experience/interests and should arrange that recommendation letters of two references will be sent to Christian Schachtrup (firstname.lastname@example.org)
