Research Associate/Fellow

Applications are invited for a researcher to conduct experimental research on two-phase flow in test facilities representative of aeroengine bearing chambers/gear boxes. The person(s) appointed will join the University of Nottingham’s Gas Turbines and Transmissions Research Centre (G2TRC) working on a range of projects the majority of which are for the Rolls Royce University Technology Centre (UTC) in Gas Turbine Transmission Systems.

G2TRC is conducting exciting and leading research supporting the formulation of two-phase flow strategies for engine transmission systems, gear boxes, engine core and accessories. We are interested in two phase PIV measurements in the air and water for shearing flow to identify values for the interfacial shear stress. The successful candidate(s) will work across a range of rigs, liaising closely with the engineering and technical team, determining the most appropriate data to collect along with the most applicable and appropriate methods of collecting and analysing data. For the role, previous experience with lasers and optical methods such as PIV would be highly desirable. Publication of research outputs is important to us.It is anticipated that the appointed researcher(s) will have supervisory input into experimental PhD projects.

Candidates must have an appropriate degree, preferably Mechanical Engineering or similar and also a PhD or equivalent in engineering (or shortly be due to obtain). It is anticipated that a major component of the PhD or post-doctoral experience will be in experimental fluids and highly advantageous if this includes 2-phase flow and/or highly rotating flow. The ability to work in a team, and interact professionally with industrial partners is essential. You will need to be able interact competently with academics, researchers, students, engineers and technicians within the team.
