Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer in Geotechnical Engineering

The Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering, Division of Geology and Geotechnics, is looking for an Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer in Geotechnical Engineering who is passionate about pushing the state-of-the-art of modelling coupled processes (thermo-hydro-chemo-mechanical) into geotechnical engineering applications. You will join a diverse gender-balanced research group with ambition to become internationally leading in Geotechnical Engineering with focus on natural geomaterials.

Information about the department and the division
The Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering has about 290 employees, encompassing a broad theoretical knowledge base, from Engineering Science to Social Sciences and Humanities, as well as design-based, artistic research. The combination of these perspectives allows for interdisciplinary advancement in the field and a broader view of various aspects of sustainability. Together, we provide a comprehensive environment for Architecture and Civil Engineering, well equipped to take on the major challenges related to building a sustainable future.

The Division of Geology and Geotechnics has three research groups: Geotechnics Research Group (GRG), Environmental Geology Research Group (EGR) and Urban Mobility Systems Research Group (UMSRG). GRG is lead by Prof. Minna Karstunen and consists currently of 15 full-time researchers. The main research focus is geotechnical modelling and its applications in engineering practice, integrating advanced soil testing with model development, implementation and application. Examples of the latter are analyses of slope stability, construction of infrastructure such as embankments and tunnels, and foundation engineering. In addition, the group conducts fundamental research that underpins the more applied research, using physics-based approaches.

Chalmers has unique upgraded (2019) climate-controlled laboratory facilities for soft soil testing and in-house prototype development, as well as computational facilities incorporating the latest developments for computational work. The upgrade involves also new, shared teaching laboratories. The laboratory development is supported by well-staffed and equipped mechanical workshop. The research operations are complemented by advanced testing for industry, linked to the challenges of major infrastructure projects, such as West Link project and High Speed rail.

Major responsibilities
As Associate Professor or Senior Lecturer, you will contribute to teaching and development of the educational portfolio both at undergraduate and Masters levels, as well as providing education as part of Continuous Professional Development to the industry. In parallel, you will conduct your brand of research independently. In particular, we would like you to lead the development of research areas related to coupled processes in porous media, encountered in geo-structures, such as road, railway and flood embankments, dams, and tunnels. We also expect you to actively contribute to our core research in soft soil engineering. An important part of the position is to engage with industry, initiating collaborations to enable innovative solutions for major stakeholders.

Position summary
The position is a permanent Faculty position, partly funded by external research projects.

Qualifications
- Undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering or a related topic, and a PhD degree in geotechnical area.
- Ability and genuine interest to engage with the international research community, as evidenced by e.g. joint publications in international peer reviewed journals and conferences
- Expertise in development of advanced experimental and/or computational techniques required to study coupled processes in porous media.
- Ability to develop independent research ideas and to obtain funding for research from industry and public bodies.
- Willingness to actively contribute in research projects lead by other academics.
- Experience in Civil/Geotechnical Engineering education at undergraduate and/or post-graduate level.
- Good ability to collaborate with the external environment.
- Fluency in English, and willingness to learn Swedish, as necessary for teaching at Master's and undergraduate levels, respectively.

The position's level will be determined on the basis of your scientific qualifications. The position of Associate Professor requires scientific expertise that is considerably higher than that required for a doctoral degree (corresponding to admission as “oavlönad docent”).

Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.
