SNF doctoral position in English Linguistics

As of February 1, 2020, the Department of English at the University of Basel is looking for a doctoral candidate in English Linguistics (with Dr. Daniela Landert, SNF-PRIMA project leader). The PhD is written in connection with the SNF project "The Pragmatics of Improvised Drama Comedy". The project investigates how the communicative framework of improvised theatre affects the creation of fictional texts and, in a broader perspective, it deals with questions of spontaneous language production and composition. As part of the SNF project, a corpus of videos and transcripts from improvised theatre shows will be compiled and the project involves field work in the United States for this purpose. In their research, the successful applicant will compare improvised fictional dialogues to dialogues in scripted fiction and in spontaneous non-fictional conversation, focusing on aspects that are typically associated with spontaneous language production.
