Data Science Expert

100%, Zurich, permanent

Scientific IT Services (SIS), a section of ITS, aim at bridging the gap between computational research and IT service and infrastructure provisioning and provide a stimulating, flexible and family-friendly working environment. SIS are working closely together with ETH researchers to provide support in the wide area of scientific computing from data management and analysis, development of scientific software to the operation of high performance and cloud computing infrastructures. SIS are currently seeking to appoint a Data Science Expert.

Job description
You support ETH researchers with scientific IT expertise in and around the wide spectrum of data science and analytics. The position is part of SIS mandate to offer data science services to the research community at ETH Zurich and to serve as a multiplier to the activities of the Swiss Data Science Center (SDSC) and the larger data science community at ETH Zurich. This includes, on the one hand side, exploring, setting up and using data science tools, techniques and computing environments, developing data analytics pipelines, scaling up, and improving both algorithms and implementations of data science software. On the other hand side, the Data Science Expert acts as a liaison between the domain scientists and the larger data science community at ETH Zurich and the SDSC. He or she interacts closely with researchers to understand their data and their scientific goals, actively contributes and finds solutions to their data science projects, and provides training and consulting on established and novel data science tools and solution paths.

Your profile
The successful candidate will hold a PhD degree in data / computational science or a related field such as physics, computational biology, computer science, electrical engineering, etc., with a good understanding of statistical and numerical methods as well as a solid background in machine learning and scientific programming. Mastery of three or more relevant programming languages (e.g. Python, C/C++, R, Matlab, or Java), previous experience in applying and using machine / deep learning techniques and libraries and (big) data analytics frameworks (e.g. scikit-learn, Apache Spark, TensorFlow, Keras, to mention a few) to a domain science and good knowledge of working in the Unix/Linux programming environment are required. Hands-on experience with HPC technologies, optimization and parallelization or GPU computing (e.g. OpenMP, MPI, or CUDA) are a plus.

In addition to strong analytical abilities, this position demands a particular interest in and flexibility to learn and/or adopt new technologies as well as working experience in an interdisciplinary scientific domain. Moreover, good communication skills and a positive, customer-oriented aptitude are necessary to effectively establish this new service and to collaborate with (not necessarily data science savvy) domain scientists and IT specialists alike to successfully enable scientific collaboration within ETH Zurich and the larger data science community. The position is located in Zurich, though occasional travel to other Swiss cities will be required.
