Professorship in Anthropology (open rank)

A Professorship in Anthropology with a focus on general anthropology is to be filled at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Basel, with the appointment scheduled to begin on August 1, 2022, or by appointment with the successful applicant.

Your position

We are looking for an outstanding scholar to lead the University of Basel's anthropology program. Required qualifications include ethnographic fieldwork experience and regional expertise in Africa. We seek scholars who place Africa at the center of debates on global social and environmental change. Preferred are applicants whose practice includes collaboration with institutional or other partners in Africa, and who demonstrate engagement with the ethics and politics of research and knowledge production. Situated within the Department of Social Sciences, the professorship is responsible teaching within the anthropology program. Additionally, the professorship plays a key role in the Centre for African Studies, and contributes to the interdisciplinary programs of Urban Studies and Changing Societies, as well as existing doctoral programs.

Your profile

Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in anthropology and demonstrate substantive research experience beyond their doctoral studies. They should demonstrate research excellence and have an outstanding track record of international publications in high-ranking journals. Additionally, we expect a commitment to pedagogy, the supervision of doctoral students, and the acquisition of external funding, as well as active service in university committees.

In addition to English, we expect German language proficiency, or alternatively, the commitment to learn German within two years of appointment.
